Using Family Supports for Young Trauma Survivors

Date/ Time:

 May 1, 2025, 1:00-2:15pm 

Abstract:

 This workshop will examine a case study which demonstrates a family-based therapy approach for working with a childhood trauma survivor. Through case study and lecture, participants will learn about relevant diagnosis and the treatment modality of IFS through a family therapy perspective. Creative modalities which are effective for adolescent populations that also support the integration of faith and practice will be discussed. Specific attention will be given to how therapy can help a family to interact with other care providers filling the roles of advocacy, training, and intervention. 

Objectives:

 a. Participants will be able to define the diagnosis criteria of DID, PTSD, Anxiety Disorder and Attachment Disorder in children. 

b. Participants will be able to implement creative modalities in therapy with adolescent trauma survivors.

c. Participants will be able to integrate IFS and Family Therapy perspectives into a specific case study.

d. Participants will be able to identify how therapy can help a family to interact with other care providers filling the roles of advocacy, training, and intervention. 

Outline:

1:00-1:10- Introduction & Review of Objectives

1:10-1:30- Lecture on clinical diagnosis relevant to childhood trauma and case introduction

1:30-1:45- Lecture on IFS & Family Therapy and how they can be used conjointly

1:45-2:00- Focused discussion on creative modalities and how these intersect with and support clients’ faith practices

2:00-2:15 Explanation from Case Study on Family Supports ideas and how the social worker can be of assistance to the family of a childhood trauma survivor

Presenter:

 Kim Cook, MSW, MA, LCSW-C

  

Kim Cook, MSW, MA, LCSW, has clinical and administrative background in outpatient mental health, primarily in faith-based agencies. She is the Director of Elu: Counseling, Consulting, and Coaching and she is an adjunct faculty member at Covenant College and Dordt University. She does consulting work with non-profits and has a certificate in Non-Profit Leadership and has been a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She offers leadership coaching especially to those in non-profit organizations. In counseling, Kim works with families, couples, individuals, and groups on a variety of issues, including relationships, mental health, spiritual growth, behavioral problems, trauma, parenting, adoption/foster care, and crisis response. She works with children of all ages and is trained in play therapy. She also has extensive experience working with teens, adults, and specific training working with clergy. Kim has been using telehealth as a modality for many years and is paneled with several major health insurance companies as an in-office and telehealth provider. She is trained in CISM and does critical incident debriefings and organizational crisis support. Kim maintains her LCSW licensure in Iowa, Maryland, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina and in Florida a telehealth license.

Continuing Education Credits Awarded/ Contact Hours: 1.25 


Elu Counseling, Consulting, and Coaching maintains responsibility for the program. Counselors and Social Workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits. This workshop meets the criteria set forth in the General Rules and Regulations of the TN Board of Social Worker Licensure, Chapter 1365-01-08 (3) for continuing education.

CE's offered? Which ones?  Elu Counseling, Coaching and Consulting maintains responsibility for the program. Participants should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits. 


Elu Counseling, Coaching and Consulting, #2235, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 03/31/2025-03/31/2026.  


Cost? This event costs $120.


Registration Deadline? Tickets can be bought right up until the time the event begins. If you are having any difficulty registering, please call 877-358-2998 for live assistance.


Format and Length? Live, hybrid event (interactive in-person & interactive virtual workshop options, both formats simultaneously). Event length is 3 clock hours, 9:30am-12:45pm with a 15 minute break, totaling 3 CEs.


Topic Area? Each live, interactive event may vary in topic area.  The registration will give specifics whether it is clinical, ethics, cultural, competence, or general. 


Instructional Level? This is a professional workshop, open only to social workers, mental health and other related professionals. Course level is intermediate through advanced practitioner.

Getting my certificate? 

In order to receive a certificate, registrants must attend the entire session. Course completion requirements include participating in the full session and completing the CE evaluation. Attendance of participants must be documented to obtain a certificate (details provided with each course, various format results in varied documentation methods). Certificates will be awarded at the close of the event by email, 24 hours after completion of the course evaluation. They will be distributed by email to participants, being sent to the email used in registration.

Grievance Procedure, Refund Request, and Cancellation Policy

1. The complaint or grievance must be submitted in writing by participant, noting the full name and contact information for the participant to ensure proper follow-up. This letter will be reviewed by the CE Advisory Committee at Elu LLC. 2. The participant will have the opportunity to support his/her allegations by arguments however brief and, if need be, by related supporting evidence.

4. Information is shared from the findings with the Elu leadership team to be utilized for improving future courses. 

5.   Elu will respond to the participant in writing regarding the outcome of the response decision.


 Refund Request & Cancellation policy: If Elu Counseling, Consulting, and Coaching decides to cancel the class, all registrants will receive a full refund. Through one-week prior to the event, registrants who need to cancel for any reason will receive a refund of 90% of their registration fee. Cancellation requests must be received no later than one-week prior to the event, by written request at https://eluccc.org/contact-us-1. Be sure to include your name, address and contact information as provided in your registration information. No refunds will be issued for any reason after the one-week prior to event deadline (7 calendar days). If there is an exceptional request, please contact Elu with a written request. Any exceptions to the no refunds after one-week prior to event policy are considered on a case-by-case basis and the decision of the training director, Kim Cook, is final. Refunds will be returned to the payee by check and sent by US mail within one week of the refund request.
